One thing I love about the choral world is that fresh talent is much more easily embraced than in the instrumental world. I think part of that comes from the fact that the voice is rooted in certain musical realities that are impossible for it to escape. You can only walk so far away from those realities before it becomes impractical (or impossible) for the performers to execute what the composer has written. As a result, new choral music tends to be less on the fringe and more palatable to audiences.
Frankly, I feel that is healthy. It encourages new life and new growth. Choral musicians don’t tend to think of composers as men who are dead, but men and women they could actually meet face to face someday. What could be better than that? or more encouraging for them to try their own hand at writing music? (see my rant on Musical Literacy)
