Complaints Choirs?

I was first exposed to the concept of ‘complaints choirs’ last week when I stumbled upon a video from the Helsinki Complaints Choir on youtube. Today I came across complaintschoir.org : home of the worldwide complaints choir movement. While on the surface I find this mildly amusing, there is also something about it that bothers me.

Perhaps it is because it is November, and it seems to me that we should be gearing up to ‘give thanks’ rather than to spend our time complaining. I really do believe that most of what is good in our world is born out of an expression of gratefulness for the things we have been blessed with and a desire to share those good things with others.

There are certainly things to complain about, but isn’t the world already negative enough? Then again, perhaps I’m taking it too seriously.

On the other hand, there is something terribly compelling about watching the video as the translation to each of the complaints shows up on the bottom of the screen. Ah, the sweetness of collective sadness and despair; it’s almost like watching Hamlet.

Hopefully, out of all this collective negativity something positive will come, even if it’s just a laugh or maybe even the comfort of knowing you’re not alone in your frustrations.
