. . . well, cough, hem-hem . . . so did I. It turns out, however, that we were both wrong . . . very, very wrong. It turns out that Gregorian chant had strong competition in the Medieval Europe, duking it out with it’s hearty rival: Ambrosian chant.
So what is Ambrosian chant? Music made from the food of the gods, of course! . . . No, actually I’m just kidding. Really, I am. Ambrosian chant is actually named after St. Ambrose. It is also known as Milanese chant, because Milan is the only place in the world where the Ambrosian service is still regularly performed.
“How do you know this?,” you might ask. Because recently a forgotten, 800-year-old manuscript containing a complete set of the chants was discovered at Harvard University and I read about it here.
